Darwin の試みたこと

来年はダーウィンの「種の起源」が1859年に発表されて150周年の記念の年になる。先日、手に入れたダーウィンの自伝（仏版）を読み始めると、ダーウィンの孫娘、ノラ・バーロー Nora Barlow さんが1958年に書いた序言に行き当たった。その中に私の心に響く言葉があった。それは以下のような言葉である（下線は私による）。

« L'Autobiographie montre comment il en vint à　changer le cours entier de la pensée victorienne, non pas en proclamant ses découvertes ou par un iconoclasme soudain, mais plutôt en cherchant à comprendre et à juger avec pondération, ouvrant ainsi un vaste champ à la recherche ultérieure. »

「この自伝には、彼がヴィクトリア朝の思想の流れ全体を変えるためにどのように取り組んだかが書かれてある。それは発見を誇示したり急激に偶像破壊したりするのではなく、理解しようとし、冷静に判断しようとすることによって行われた」

ダーウィンがやったこのことこそ（"chercher à comprendre et à juger avec pondération"）すべての科学者に求められているのだろう。ある意味ではこれこそ哲学的な営みであり、これからの私にも大きな勇気を与えてくれる言葉である。

原文を調べると以下のようになっている。

“The Autobiography shows how it was that he altered the whole course of Victorian thought, not by blazoning his discoveries nor by sudden iconoclasm, but rather through searching insight and pondered judgments opening up vast fields for further research.”

この原文を最初に読んでいたら、今の私であれば読み過ごしていたかもしれない。フランス語で触発されるところ大なのである。
