2007年5月20日、生命の起源について問い続けたアメリカの科学者、スタンレー・ミラーが77歳で亡くなった。以前であれば特に注意を惹かない科学者だったであろう。しかし、生命の起源という根源的な問題について実験的に答えを出そうとした存在には興味が湧いている。原始のスープからアミノ酸が得られたことを示した彼の実験について、生命の起源に対しての答えは何も得られていないという批判は当然なのかもしれない。アミノ酸から有機体への道は果てしもなく遠いように見えるからだ。しかし、問を立ててそこに向かう実験をした最初の人であることには変わりはなく、その時彼の中でどのようなことが起こっていたのか、私の好奇心を掻き立てる。
ユーリー/ミラーの実験 Urey-Miller experiment
The experiment that simulated hypothetical conditions present on the early Earth and tested for the occurrence of chemical evolution. Specifically, the experiment tested Oparin and Haldane's hypothesis that conditions on the primitive Earth favored chemical reactions that synthesized organic compounds from inorganic precursors. Considered to be the classic experiment on the origin of life, it was conducted in 1953 by Stanley L. Miller and Harold C. Urey at the University of Chicago (Science 117: 528-529, 1953).
